Zika virus, a mosquito-borne flavivirus was discovered first in Uganda’s Zika Forest. This virus is very closely related to West Nile virus, yellow fever and dengue.
Zika virus infection usually causes mild symptoms such as headache, fever, conjunctivitis and muscle pain. But, infections during pregnancy may cause serious birth defects such as microcephaly, which is a small head size, and brain abnormalities.
Zika virus can be spread by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, but also sexually or through blood transfusions. You can find it in many parts of Africa, Asia, Pacific Islands and Americas.
