My favorite biblical text is found in the book of James, verses 1:26–27. It states that those who claim to be religious but cannot control their speech are deceived and their religion is useless. God our Father acknowledges this religion as perfect and pure: care for widows and orphans in distress and avoidance of contamination from the outside world. (Zondervan NIV Study Bible 2020). James the Just, also known as James the Brother of Jesus, wrote this section and the entire Epistle to James. It was written between 48 and 60 CE in Jerusalem (Riesner 2007, 2007). This chapter was originally intended for Jews but has found significant resonance with Christians.
It provides an accurate understanding of what faith looks like outwardly. True Christians cannot be seen as being able to help those who are suffering and afflicted. It is clear that compassion must be shown to those in need. The most hated people in Jewish culture were widows and orphans. Looking at the present world, we see that many people are suffering from pain and suffering. As a Christian it is my obligation to love them, as this scripture teaches. This verse emphasizes my obligation as a Christian to show love and care for those in need.
