Tradozone and zolpidem are common medications used to treat insomnia. Trazodone is used for depression treatment, while hydroxyzine (Silvestro), is a sedative and antihistamine. Zylopidem, however, should always be considered the medicine of choice for patients as it is used primarily to treat insomnia. This hypnotic works by altering brain chemical levels in people with insomnia. A study by the American Academy of Sleep Medicines showed that three of the medication’s effects improve sleep quality in the first week of treating insomnia. The second week is when zolpidem can help patients sleep better (Edinoff, 2021). The action lasts longer than that of hydroxyzine or trazodone. Tradozone, hydroxyzine and zolpidem are more likely to cause adverse reactions.
Side effects that tradozone can cause include blurred vision and dry mouth. Side effects include dizziness, insomnia, wearyness, dry mouth and urine retention. Zolpidem is preferred due to the common side effects such as dizziness and sleepiness (Ho et. al. 2020). Tradozone can also increase suicidal ideas and behaviors in patients, so it should be avoided. It can lead to mental decline and further injury.
Zolpidem’s cost effectiveness should be another reason to choose it (Berger 2002). The average prescription cost for tradozone is around $80 while zolpidem costs approximately $55. This shows that Zolpidem is cheaper and more manageable for patients than tradozone. The most effective and clinically-appropriate treatment for the patient is 10 mg of Zolpidem at night each day.
