Darnell will be the focus of this case study. Darnell is a 25-year-old male student who lives outside campus. His academic adviser recommended that he go to university counseling. The debate will include engagement and assessment such as biopsychosocial assessments, intervention, evaluation, termination of Darnell’s diagnosis. Darnell stated that he felt isolated and only had a few friends. Darnell said he felt sad and worried. Darnell said that he is having trouble figuring out what normal behavior looks like and that he felt more alone lately. Darnell also said that he has had difficulty maintaining friendships with long-term partners since his friends found him odd. Darnell says he is having trouble keeping up with female friends. After several dates, Darnell would start to lose interest in the women that he was attracted. He admitted that it was women who end partnerships, and not men.
Engagement
Darnell is one of four siblings in a large family. Every sibling has a successful career, is married and lives in an urban setting. His two older sisters were close to his heart, and his relationship with the younger sister was competitive. They live in Texas, although their parents recently split. While his mother is a nurse and his father an electrician, he is the son of a pharmacist. Darnell described his mother as compassionate, but was sometimes unable to take care of their needs because she was stressed.
Darnell spoke out about his turbulent upbringing and how it was a result of many disputes with his brothers. His father told Darnell how stupid he was to compare with his sisters when he returned from work. He had received a D in sixth grade. He maintained close relationships with his mother, even despite her drunken shouts. He would often weep to go to bed at night. He cried until he was in his freshman year. At that point, his father advised him to quit and get up. He has kept his anger private since then.
Darnell, a high school basketball player and player in football, was an athlete. Darnell said that he could take complete control of his own actions on the field. He was active in various organizations and maintained a 3.30 GPA. Following high school graduation, he decided to become a semi-professional football player in the hope of becoming a professional. Since his performances were not exceptional, Darnell decided to attend college. Darnell has denied any instances of drug abuse or sexual violence. Darnell said he didn’t seek treatment early and that he never had suicidal thoughts or plans to kill himself. Darnell avoided eye contact and seemed to be hesitant in answering questions.
