Robert Putnam was one of many people who have criticised the American use social capital for public issues. Even though the United States has some of the strongest institutions in the world, certain challenges must be dealt with using social capital tools. American society has been affected by issues such as institutional racism. Americans are now attempting to find a common approach to this issue through the use of social media and technology like Facebook. Social media can be used in many ways to mobilize against specific social issues. Robert Putnam’s claims have been questioned by some stakeholders. While social media is a platform for Americans to voice their concerns, there are many elements that don’t fit Putman’s definition of the social capital used in public matters.
Racial orientation plays a role in the increased social capital use by Americans due to social media. In 2018, for example, there were new organizations formed to promote the white agenda following the rise of Black Lives Matter (Williamson and al., 2018). Although social capital does not promote unanimity it is important to note that social capital can be used when people are able to use their social capital in support of police brutality. The dispute here isn’t about property. However, in reality the police used excessive force against members of other ethnic groups and even killed them. These events require the involvement of all the country as a loss of life is a tragedy. This problem can be analyzed based upon the response of the police to Trump-loss demonstrators, who seize Capitol Hill. This force cannot be compared with the one used on Black Lives Matter activists.
