Because literature is a reflection on society, it should highlight many of the problems faced by people. Literary writers are able to convey the challenges faced by society through their subject matters. Popol Vuh, translated by Dennis Tedlock, and Sundiata translated by Djibril Taksir Niane is an example of this type writing. The two texts are different in setting, but the characters show the same obstacles heroes face to be successful, thus emphasizing the importance of heroism.
Nearly every civilization holds heroism high in their hearts. Most heroes are people who have been marginalized and are initially seen to have little or no impact on their communities. However, they are capable of overcoming preconceived ideas and obstacles. Sundiata was a hard-working child who could not be called successful. Sundiata received his mother as a marriage present from the monarch. Sundiata became exposed to prejudice by being exposed to her mother. Sundiata’s stepmother Sassouma tortured Sundiata and his family so much that she ordered witches to kill him in order that he wouldn’t inherit the throne. Sundiata’s compassion saved his life. The origins of Hunahpu, Xbalanque and Xbalanque in Popol Vuh remain a mystery. These were born when One Hunahpu spat on their mother. Their grandpa attempted to kill their mother before they gave birth but their grandmother escapes. The owl messengers assigned with her death help her escape.
However, the challenges people face in today’s world are not the only ones.
