To combat the serious obstacles facing seniors in the United States, there must be a strong effort to increase the number of senior citizens. Older people are forced to go back to the countryside because of outdated societal norms. Social isolation is a problem due to chronic diseases and the need for medication (Segal, et al. 2013, 2013). The biochemical and physiological changes caused by ageing are perhaps the biggest problem for geriatrics. This population is more susceptible to chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. This group also has other comorbidities, which means they are at greater risk of polypharmacy. However, because their cognitive impairments mean that they can be less patient with the regimens. Systemic issues are common. Due to their low insurance coverage and high healthcare costs, they have poor health-seeking behaviors. Individuals with physical impairment are vulnerable to abuse or mistreatment because they cannot do all their own daily tasks (Segal and al., 2013,). A large portion of elderly people are poor and financially unstable. These people are not able to find work that will provide a living for their family. Their inability to pay for healthcare and their dependence on social programs means they cannot afford medical treatment. As the number of elderly people continues to increase, it is important to take more steps to dismantle the old age stereotype that makes them feel worthless and lonely.
Supplemental security income (SSI), provides monthly payment to those with low income and limited resources. To be eligible for SSI one must have a minimum of 65 years, be blind or severely handicapped. The benefits that SSI provides are tailored to meet the needs of seniors. Social Security Administration, (SSA), informs eligible people and requires that they apply.
Energy assistance for those with low incomes
LIHEAP (low-income energy assistance program) is federally funded. This program helps low-income families pay their cooling and heating bills as well as other energy costs. LIHEAP also offers emergency assistance for families who are in financial distress. It is managed by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. This program is open to the majority of senior citizens. Family members can get up to $2,000 in financial aid each year under this program.
