The online coordination and donation of money and food for local food drives was my semester’s service-learning project. One of my future responsibilities as a social worker will be to arrange in-kind assistance programs. These in-kind services may be delivered as coupons or real goods. I was able to serve as a service learner and be at the forefront of one of society’s most critical issues, poverty. Segal and colleagues. Segal et al. (2019) state that one way to offer in-kind services are food stamps and free medical clinics. Through the coordination of the food-and-money appeal, monthly subsidies will be available to the poor. The future I plan to direct my efforts with Temporary assistance for needy families and Supplemental Security Income. These are the biggest organizations providing financial assistance to the homeless.
My service-learning experiences allowed me to experience one of my responsibilities as a social worker, which was to work to change society. Social reform is essential in order to help vulnerable populations and those most at risk. My primary responsibility, as a social worker will be to address unemployment, underdevelopment and prejudice. (Segal, et. al., 2019, Segal). This food drive is just the first step in a larger effort to end the unequal distribution of wealth and opportunities among different community groups. My goal as a social worker is to help families and individuals who are less fortunate. I want to be a social worker. This requires knowledge about current welfare programs as well as how to connect people in need.
Education of the poor will help to reduce poverty. These people are trained to make personal changes in their lives. The social work classes I teach will aid my clients to understand their psychosocial circumstances and help them develop the motivation. As a social worker, I learned that advocacy for social equality is my duty (Segal and al. 2019, 2019). The service-learning was crucial for me to understand my main responsibilities as social workers. Although social work can often be the execution of something, most in-person services now fall under the purview of COVID-19. The social worker’s main task is to work with those who are suffering from poverty. We have a responsibility to offer them immediate material and emotional assistance.
As a social worker, my responsibilities extend far beyond financial and food assistance. Lavee (2018) states that social workers have to assist clients with exercising constitutional rights. Social rights for clients include assistance with family members, medical treatment and the right to social welfare. Social workers ensure that people in poor circumstances receive psychological help. Empathy is therefore a requirement.
