Listening is best done by avoiding multitasking, and not comparing your experience with others. Multitasking is a popular way to communicate with tech-savvy young people. Multitasking is a popular way for people to communicate. It makes it harder to be focused and meaningfully converse. Multitasking causes people to lose their focus and can lead to poor listening skills. (Headlee (2015) Multitasking is a problem that makes it difficult for people to have meaningful conversations and interact with other people. Individuals should not compare their experiences in a conversation. This can lead to an overvaluing of the views and egocentric viewpoints. People react differently to events similar.
Attention to the spoken and written messages is the first quality. Variables that could distract from attention are not a good way to pay attention. An ideal listener must nod when a speaker speaks. It encourages them to continue their speaking and shows the audience that they are engaged with the topic. An excellent listener maintains eye contact with the speaker throughout the discussion to encourage engagement. Good listeners should not interrupt the speaker but wait until they have a chance to respond. Interrupting the speaker can disrupt the flow of information and reduce the effectiveness of the delivery. Headlee (2015). A great listener doesn’t prejudgment the speaker, but rather engages with him objectively to come up with the best conclusions.
Because I don’t multitask, I can listen well and pay close attention to what the speaker is saying. While chatting with people, I make sure my phone stays off/on quiet mode. I can avoid getting interrupted by calls or texts, phone notifications, and text messages. My ability to listen is a strength. I keep my eyes open during conversations with others in order to learn verbal and nonverbal sign from them. By not pontificating, I try to keep my mind open and learn from other people. In order to enrich conversations with others, I will ask them pertinent questions.
One way that I may use the Lucas Textbook is to develop my emotional intelligence and connect with others. Empathy is the ability to show empathy and foster emotional connections with others. Empathy helps people to feel less egocentric and connect with others’ (Lucas (2012)). I will be able to avoid making hasty judgements based on the information in this book. Sometimes, it is easy to fall prejudgment when speaking with someone who has a well-known perspective. The prejudgment can obscure logic and make it difficult to listen to someone objectively.
