Monsanto invested substantial amounts in the biotechnology sector, which allows the creation of genetically-engineered seeds and plants. These goods have led to increased food production and improved food security. However, GM goods are being challenged as they can pose serious environmental and health risk (Le Menestrel 2022). These items are thought to expose the users to long-term diseases like cancer. Its $13.5 billion sales are evidence of its growth. The controversies around genetically modified plants (GMP) have intensified since President Obama signed the Agricultural Appropriations Bill. They were protected from any legal action regarding product safety.
Ethics culture
Monsanto doesn’t promote an ethics culture that responds to the needs of its stakeholders. Corporations are governed by key stakeholders, including farmers, employees, owners and government. Although the corporation invested in biotechnology it does not ensure that its products are safe for customers’ health. Honesty, transparency, cooperation, respect and co-operation are the company’s core principles. Thuy (2018) states that they don’t provide any information on the effects their goods have on health or the environment. To avoid true customer liability, the firm colludes with authorities. In the unlikely event that genetically modified goods (GM) are found to have harmful effects, the Agricultural Appropriations Bill protects the company against potential lawsuits. Monsanto’s strict patent control laws gave them an unfair competitive edge over other companies. Many lawsuits against corporations have also been filed, which highlights their grave ethical concerns.
There are advantages and there are concerns about GM
GM has helped increase food security, and lessen the risk of people becoming hungry. GMOs made from drought-resistant GMOs are created by bioengineering firms, which offer viable solutions to ensuring food security in the face of climate change. GM seeds that can withstand drought are essential for the production of agricultural crops in most countries. Secondly, GM crops have increased the output of farms and their income. GM crops yield higher than organic crops. Farmers can get a better return on investment (ROI), from their production (Carbonell 2016). Increasing the quantity of income and increasing food security are reasons to encourage people to get involved in agriculture.
GMO foods are discouraged for their use due to the numerous environmental and health problems. GMO crops may contain cancer-causing or other harmful toxins. Genetically modified (GM), or genetically engineered foods, rely on synthetic fertilizers and herbicides such as glyphosate. This includes harmful substances which can be detrimental to our health. GM crops also have negative effects on biodiversity. Monsanto and other companies create GMO crops which are resilient to predation. In addition, the toxic chemicals employed in the manufacturing process, such as fertilizers and herbicides like Round-up, endanger the terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity, resulting in the extinction of some species (Glaab & Partzsch, 2018). In addition to this, Round-up has been used in a way that makes it more difficult to grow weeds resistant to.
How can harm be controlled
Sustainable health and environmentally-friendly herbs are key to the company’s sustainability. Monsanto needs to study all components of Round-up medicines and ensure that they contain only environmentally-friendly ingredients. This will help Monsanto achieve sustainability. Monsanto may also use bio-engineering to develop Round-up products that only target noxious plants and don’t harm beneficial animals.
