Hildegard E.Peplau believes that nursing is both a developing force and an education tool. It involves the interaction between two or more people with the same goal. GONZALO, 2002. It’s “an interpersonal process that involves therapeutic encounters between patients or other people in need of healthcare services and specially trained nurses.” Patients and nurses can gain mutual benefits from working together toward a shared objective. Hildegard Peplau’s theory on interpersonal relations states that the nurse can interact with the patient. Peplau stressed that therapeutic interactions foster both patient growth and nurse growth. Communication skills and interviewing are essential nursing abilities. Peplau also stated that nurses should first learn to understand their client to help them develop and not limit their options to the ones they value.
Hildegard Peplau believes that the nursing job is complex. GONZALO, 2021. A nurse must treat each patient with respect, as they would in any other setting. A nurse must foster trust. The nurse acts as a teacher and imparts information according to the patients’ needs. As a teacher, the nurse provides information to help the patient understand the problem. The nurse acts as a counselor and helps the patient understand and integrate the importance of their current circumstances. She also offers advice and motivation for making changes. A nurse is the patient’s advocate, helping to define the areas of dependence, independence and interdependence. A nurse, as the leader, is accountable for helping the patient take full control of achieving their treatment goals. Nurses can also play other roles, such as technical expert, coach, instructor, socialization safety agent, mediator, administrator and record-watcher.
During orientation, the issue will be identified. When the nurse meets the patient, everything starts. The orientation stage identifies what kind of services the patient requires. GONZALO, 2021. The nurse will evaluate the patient’s current health and situation during the orientation phase.
Part of the identification process is expert selection and delivery of necessary assistance. The patient starts to feel like they belong and that they are capable of handling the situation, decreasing feelings of despair and helplessness. GONZALO (2021) is where the nursing care plan for the patient is developed based upon the patient’s objectives and circumstances.
