Introduction
Quality of care is a key factor in a patient’s recovery journey. A patient-centered environment improves the nursing experience and quality. In order to establish a trusting relationship and deliver personalized healing services, nurses must be able to understand the culture and medical history of each patient. Based on Jean Watson’s theories, Madeleine Leininger and Jean Watson, this paper will examine two cases. The paper will focus on two patients to determine what nursing should do to give optimal care.
Case Study No. 1
Using Leininger’s Culture Care Model, what factors in the story shared by Mrs. Franklin – Jones should be considered by Nurse Hernandez when planning for the patient’s discharge?
Nurse Hernandez received important details about Mrs. Franklin Jones’ personal life. Mrs. Franklin Jones gave details about her blood pressure and how often she forgets to take her medication. Although she was given diet documents by the clinic, she did not read them. Because of her stress at work, she is looking into bush tea as a way to relax. This information should be considered by Nurse Hernandez when she plans Mrs. Franklin’s discharge instructions. Nurse Hernandez should inform Mrs. Franklin Jones of ways she can improve her life quality. These guidelines include following prescribed medication and staying healthy. It also means not stressing. Nurse Hernandez may also suggest Mrs. Franklin herbal teas.
The nurse should inform Mrs. Franklin of the need to adhere to her prescriptions. It is crucial that Mrs. Franklin fully understands both the benefits and risks of taking the medication. It’s possible to be analeptic with the use of medicine. Mrs. Franklin also benefits from the medication, which lowers her blood pressure. This medication can help prevent other health issues such as diabetes or organ damage. Also, you are less likely to have a stroke or heart attack. Mrs. Franklin must follow an appropriate diet plan. Dr. Leininger must follow the culture-care model when giving advice to Mrs. Franklin about her diet plan. Nurse Hernandez should encourage Mrs. Franklin to cook at home. Doing so will enable Mrs. Franklin make adjustments to her recipe and allow her to make healthy, low-fat meals. To improve her health, she should eat more vegetables and fruits. Tomas might feel stressed at work because she may have lost her job. Her hypertension could have been exacerbated by stress. It was a condition that her mother also suffered from. Nurse Hernandez needs to stress Mrs. Franklin’s need for rest. Overworking is not a good idea. Tomas is able to help her when needed and ensure that she gets enough sleep. The nurse must also address Mrs. Franklin’s use of bush-tea as a supplement. Picking (2011) reported that Jamaicans use traditional medicine in combination with prescribed drugs to manage acute and chronic diseases. Bush teas have many health benefits. Understanding how herbal products can interact with prescribed medicines and the possible side effects on your body is crucial. Mrs. Franklin should seek advice from Nurse Hernandez if there are side effects.
What is the importance of Culture Care Diversity in nursing?
Culture Care Diversity theory says that nurses cannot separate care from cultural beliefs or practices. These two are closely related. Cultural Competence is the ability of a healthcare provider, or another service provider, to offer services that meet diverse social and cultural needs of patients. (Health Policy Institute 2020). When nurses are different, patients receive better care. Understanding the culture of patients helps healthcare providers better understand their needs. (Bettencourt 2016). A bridge is created between the culture of medicine and patients’ beliefs and practices. Patients are more comfortable. This helps in healing. Nurses who are able to understand the religious and cultural beliefs of patients can provide best care. Consideration should be given to patients’ cultural heritage when planning nursing. It affects how they will respond to care and treatment.
Using Leininger’s Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality, develop a care plan for Mrs. Franklin – Jones.
An effective plan of care should address the four main factors that affect Mrs. Franklin – Jones’ health. This care plan must include Mrs. Franklin- Jones’ prescription medication, a healthy eating routine, avoiding stress and monotony at work and caution with supplementary bush tea. Nursing assessments must be adhered to by all nurses. The nurse should find out what Mrs. Franklin – Jones knows about taking the medication, rest, an appropriate diet, and how they all connect to her health condition. It is the nurse’s responsibility to determine what Mrs. Franklin doesn’t have, and then correct it. Misinformation is to be corrected by the healthcare provider. It is your responsibility to give Mrs. Franklin all information you can so she understands the importance and helps her implement a healthy lifestyle. The nurse can devise a system to ensure that Mrs. Franklin – Jones takes her medication every day and on time. An alarm can be set by the nurse to remind Mrs. Franklin – Jones to remember when her medication is due.
