Poor management can be seen at the Freeman-Brown Private School. The school (abbreviated as FBPS in this essay) was once a beacon in the community as people believed that their children were better suited off there than in public schools. The school grew for 20 years until it was outnumbered by the publicly-chartered schools. People were left with bitter memories of the downsizing. The essay will address the issues surrounding the closure of the school and offer suggestions for school management to improve. FBPS could have notified everyone earlier about Staunton Campus’ closure, despite being facing economic difficulties and competition. Also, they should have begun the evacuation of students as soon as possible to make everyone happy.
Open system models assume that organisations exist in a environment in which they are interdependent in a symbiotic relationship. To create output, an organization needs inputs such as capital or human resources. These outputs can then be used for feedback, which may prove useful when managing an organisation (Cummings 2014). The Free-Brown Public school was an open system when it was founded. The school took tuition money from the parents and used it to provide the best educational environment for its students. It was highly regarded as a school of high quality for a long time. However, the school failed to respect boundaries and interact with the outside world. The school kept the information from their parents, and did not attempt to notify them about possible closure. These restrictions and low information exchange caused further problems in the school’s relationships with the outside world, leading to financial decline.
Complex adaptive systems have the ability to adapt easily to change environments (Chan 2001). For organizations that want to thrive in an ever-changing environment, this approach is crucial. The Freeman-Brown Private Schools failed in this area as well. The schools were not able to adapt to the many changes in their environment. The economic crisis that hit the country in 2008 led to the closure of many schools. Charter schools even emerged close to the FBPS, despite the fact public schools were successful. Some schools were transferred as a result. Due to poor management skills and financial performance, they were in fierce competition.
The concepts of climate and organizational cultures are very closely linked. Both describe what people’s work experiences are like. The culture of an organization is the shared beliefs and values that every employee must adhere to. The organizational climate refers to the influence of these values and beliefs on employees. (Schneider, Ehrhart & Macey, 2013)
While the school’s organizational culture was not highlighted, it was evident that they had poor communication skills. Students and employees were not informed about school closing. Second, parents did not allow media access to their meeting. They were determined that their kids would be transported to school every day and the schools should close. The environment was poor and would have been difficult to succeed.
After I read the case about the FBPS School, it became clear that the school had to be closed. Their financial situation would be improved if they concentrated on just two campuses.
