Good teamwork is essential for any group that strives to be high-performing. West Coast Transit Firm, is an example of such a firm. The group works together to solve complicated problems and give you new options. West Coast Transit’s (WCT), there is a drop in gross sales. Pete Denson has been asked by the supervisor for advertising to direct a group of managers so that you can find an answer. Lea Jing (Jon Mahonney), Katarina Tanney and Katarina Turner are their managers. We’ll be discussing their workplace dynamics and how efficient they are as a gaggle.
Efficient Group Work
A workforce is taken into account as efficient if it meets the next three-criteria member satisfaction, workforce viability and job efficiency (Uhl-Bien, Osborn, & Schermerhorn, 2014). The workforce must be able to meet the needs of its members. Member satisfaction is defined as the workforce that meets these criteria. This criterion is not met by WCT’s workforce. Katarina Tanney cites the fact that being in the workforce causes additional problems for her family.
Workforce viability is the opposite. It requires that workforce members are able to collaborate in harmony. WCT has failed to fulfill this criterion. When Denson, the chief of WCT, refers to complaints made by other members, it becomes a battle. Tanney refuses to join the workforce until he makes an apology.
Finally, the notion of workforce efficiency can be used to evaluate an efficient workforce. When it comes down to the effectiveness of a workforce in achieving its goals, group efficiency will be evaluated. In this case, WCT will review workforce efficiency in order to determine how effective the marketing technique used.
Steps in Group Formation
Based on Bruce Tuckman, workforce improvement needs to be achieved in three phases, specifically; forming storming, norming, performing, and adjourning (Uhl-Bien, Osborn, & Schermerhorn, 2014). The first stage in which all members of the workforce work together to achieve a common goal is called formation. Bernie Hollis from WCT was the Vice President for Advertising and Marketing. He demanded Denson, along with three others, to meet together in order to create an advertising strategy that will increase sales. Instability is a hallmark of the first stage (Harper 2019). It is quite evident at the West Coast’s initial assembly.
Storming is the second stage. This stage sees workforce members start to share their ideas and create conflicts. Workforce members feel overwhelmed by the reality and burden of the task at hand. In the WCT case Mahonney, Tanney, and others described the mission proposal as “huge” and impossible to accomplish. Tanney leaves the room after battle breaks out during the first assembly.
Third stage is called norming. The third stage of workforce improvement is norming. This involves the workers resolving differences and addressing conflicts that resulted in the previous stage. The WCT case doesn’t allow the workforce to get that far. This stage is marked by unity and cohesion.
